At least once a day, someone feels compelled to tell me their viewpoint on social media. I hate Facebook because. I hate Linked In because. Twitter is evil because. Everything from stolen identities to cyberbullies to virtual or wanna-be porn stars friending their husbands.
Get over it. Social Media is here to stay. Its the fastest growing industry on the planet and if you are in sales or ministry or breathing and you deal with other breathing creatures then social media will help you in your business. That’s if you do it right.
Now, most people have the sense God gave a goose and they don’t put photos or say things that could get them into legal trouble or fired from their current job. Social media is public. So unless you want your undies in your school, work, charity or home run up the flagpole don’t photograph them and post them to social media.
Now here’s where people seem to derail. Post on your page only items that present you as a professional, someone who cares about kids, dogs and trees, or someone with half a brain. So many people get in the junky habit of trolling for likes and shares that they don’t step back for a moment and think about how this reflects them as a person that could be looking for a job, a date or a private school in the coming months or years.
The fact is, social media is one of the fastest, cheapest and most effective ways to market your business, product or service organically. You want to meet people. You want to join groups. You want to participate, but you need to be selective and smart with your time. It’s true – social media will eat you and your profit margin alive if you let it.
If you are hiring out, hire the person who takes the time to get to know you. He or she should know your product line, your market and your target market as well if not better than you do. Organic doesn’t mean easy, but it does mean smart. Organic takes time. There are a lot of nuances in social media that a buckshot approach of one size fits all will prove to be highly effective or completely disasterous.
I am here to answer questions you have. I am here to help you succeed. Like it or hate it, social media is here to stay.
